It is used for solubilization and protein denaturation, suitable for denaturing applications in PAGE (Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis). Most proteins bind to SDS at a ratio of 1.4 g SDS per gram of protein. In relation to the overall negative charge carried by the bound SDS, the intrinsic charge of the protein is almost negligible.
