Here's an interesting story about Dimethyl sulfoxide-d6 (CAS: 2206-27-1) that I'd like to share with fellow chemistry enthusiasts.
One month ago Friday morning, I had an interesting conversation with a chemical customer from the United States. We shared our frustrations about the passed two years COVID-19 pandemic and talked about our respective cities' developments. During our conversation, he mentioned a batch of Dimethyl sulfoxide-d6 (CAS: 2206-27-1) that had been sitting unsold for a long time due to the unique circumstances of that period.
Unfortunately, the liquid and the iron packaging of the product had undergone a chemical reaction, resulting in a change of the originally clear and transparent liquid to a pale yellow color, rendering it unusable. The customer expressed his disappointment and informed me that disposing of this batch of chemically compromised products would incur significant costs. Intrigued by his description and the shared information about available resources, I decided to investigate further.
After parting ways with the customer, I delved into the Dimethyl sulfoxide-d6's MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) and other related technical documentation, studying the molecular properties of the product. It was then that I discovered a potential solution to salvage this batch of defective items, which could save the customer a substantial amount of money. I joined forces with our doctoral advisor from Jiang Nan University and embarked on a vacuum distillation and purification experiment, aiming to remove the iron ions and refine the product.
Throughout the purification process, I was concerned that excessive furnace temperatures might affect the color of the product. However, using temperature sensors was crucial to ensure precise control and prevent the product from becoming overly contaminated during purification. Fortunately, my worries proved unfounded, and the outcome of the experiment was evident.
